Would you enjoy working with a great team of fellow volunteers to take the helm of a WRV restoration project and lead it to success? If leadership, teamwork, project planning and getting "behind the scenes" with restoration sound like they're up your alley, you're a great candidate to become a WRV Project Leader! Consider taking our training to become a Project Leader or Assistant Project Leader for the 2014 season.
WHAT IS PROJECT LEADERSHIP?
The Project Leader organizes the project leadership team; works with land managers and WRV staff; and is the single person with the comprehensive "big picture" view of a project. This role is the behind the scenes organization of WRV restoration projects. WRV will depend upon many dedicated volunteers to complete 95+ stewardship projects on public lands this season. Most WRV projects are managed by a leadership team that includes a Project Leader, Technical Advisor, Lead Cook and Cook team, Tool Manager and sometimes others. The Project Leader coordinates the team and ensures that all aspects of a project are taken care of prior to the project event.
Most new Project Leaders start off as an Assistant Project Leader, working with an experienced Project Leader to learn the ropes of project management. Assisting is a great way to gradually step into the role.
**You're never on your own as a leader in WRV - fellow volunteers and the WRV staff are here to help you through every step of the process.**
An integral part of becoming a WRV Project Leader is understanding WRV projects and leadership team. It is recommended that all PL trainees complete or will complete basic Crew Leader training or have sufficient project experience. If you have no experience with WRV but really want to get involved on the higher level planning of projects, we encourage you to take the training and then volunteer on a couple of projects to understand how WRV events operate before taking on a leading role.
TRAINING FEE
Regular Fee: $50
Discounted Fee: $20 (for current dues-paying members and volunteers, this fee covers the cost to print the manual and provide food).
Scholarships are available. If you are an active WRV member, do not let the cost stop you from becoming a the next great WRV Project Leader. Please call the office to discuss. DISCOUNTS and CANCELLATION POLICY.
We'll discuss the roles and responsibilities of a WRV Technical Advisor (TA), and how the TA works within a WRV Project Team. We'll discuss how to plan a project that accomplishes the desired technical goals, but also works well for crew leaders and volunteers. The training runs from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Arrive at 5:30pm to for food!
This is NOT a training session on the technical design aspects of projects. Since projects vary so much, and employ so many different restoration techniques, the best way to learn design is "on the job" as an Assistant Technical Advisor (ATA).
We'll have some time during the session for returning TAs to describe the highlights of what they have learned being a TA.
WRV has a relatively small TA community, so we also want this session to be a venue to meet each other, share ideas, and ask questions of your peers.

The recent historic flood of 2013 has caused a staggering amount of damage and change to trails, infrastructure and natural resources across the Front Range, particularly in Boulder County. In the coming months, there will be a need to engage thousands of volunteers to repair trails and restore streams and other natural resources impacted by the flood. To manage all of these volunteers, we will need many crew leaders!
Crew leadership with WRV is one of the best ways to step up and make the most difference. Your skills and passion will be multiplied by the volunteers you lead.
At this one day training, you will learn crew management and trail/restoration skills through hands-on practice to become a crew leader.
Crew leaders are some of the most important people on any successful project. Crew leadership is a great way to enhance your stewardship of public lands and build your professional leadership skills while helping other volunteers get the most out of a project!
This training will help you develop:
- team building skills
- situational leadership skills
- proper tool usage techniques
- and volunteer care and safety protocols.
If our training location permits, you will also be introduced to the ecological restoration and trail repair techniques and get hands-on practice as a crew leader.
TRAINING FEE
$50 for non-members. Discounted Fee: $25.00 (for current WRV members). If you crew lead twice on a post-fire project after the training, you will receive the discount price. After completing two projects this year, you can request a refund of the difference between the full price and the discounted price.
Every WRV project requires tools. No Tools, No Project! Tool managers are the beloved volunteers who put so much care into organizing the tools and gear for a project, and transporting them to and from the worksite.
Tool management is a great way to get more involved with a project without a lot of training or experience. And, you can usually take off during the middle of a project to relax or recreate if you like.
On this March 18 evening, from 5:00pm-7:30pm, we'll gather at our tool shed in Gunbarrel to talk about how tool managers work with the rest of project planning team, assemble a tool list, transport tools to and from the site, stage tools for crews, help with camp set-up, and more. You'll have a chance to see our spectacular collection of tools and ask questions. Once trained, you can mentor with an experienced tool manager to fine tune your skills on a real project!
Thursday Mar 20, 2014 - Thursday Mar 20, 2014 - Number of Volunteers: 30
Cooks are some of the most important people on a project! Have fun with a great group of folks while learning the basics of project support, including meal planning, food prep, camp setup, cleanup, take down, and many other camp related support issues.
TOP CHEF....WRV STYLE!
This training will be held in Fort Collins from 6-9pm on Thursday, March 27, 2014.
If the spirit moves you, bring a dish for 4 to share and we'll sample each other's best efforts. Bring your calendars and plan on signing up for a project. Who wants just a meeting when we can have a party???
Note: This is not a cooking class. If you already enjoy cooking, logistics and organization, and being outdoors working with foodies, we need you!

Myrtle spurge has been designated as a List A weed that must be exterminated wherever it has been detected. It will eventually take over an entire property and spread to nearby neighbors and open spaces if not treated, and because they have few or no predators that can attack them, these weeds crowd out the diverse native plants that make up our local flora, causing significant damage to our native ecosystems. It is toxic to people and wildlife, and must be destroyed!
The Myrtle Spurge Task Force needs YOU to help WRV get out there and educate local Boulderites about this dangerous weed! We need foot soldiers to go door to door educating people about this scourge!
At the Task Force orientation evening, we'll talk more about myrtle spurge and develop plans for educating the people living in hotspot areas of infestation. WRV will be organizing teams of volunteers to remove myrtle spurge infestations for local residents who are not able to do it themselves. In order for these efforts to be successful, we need to have the public aware, receptive, and participating in our push to eradicate this nasty invasive weed. YOU can make the difference by joining the Myrtle Spurge Task Force and helping us get the word out!
If you would like to know more about the event, please email or call Lauren Poulos at lauren@wlrv.org or 303-543-1411 Ext. 5#.

WRV is looking for volunteers willing to lend first aid support on our projects. Taking this valuable course will give you the skills and current certification to step up and help care for your fellow friends and volunteers!
Ever think about what you would do if someone needed your help in the back country? This course is designed to provide people with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to care for those who are injured or suddenly ill in remote locations. You will receive hands on practice time and participate in first aid scenarios that will sharpen your first aid skills and give you a chance to practice in "real life" situations.
This 8-hour course is separated into two 4-hour sessions and includes classroom instruction, demonstration, skills practice, the use of audio/visual materials, and student participation.
This 16-hour course consists of 2 4-hour evening classroom sessions and then an all-day field session (April 27) to practice your newly acquired skills in real world scenarios.
Please Note: CPR instruction is NOT part of this Wilderness First Aid course. Individuals in remote locations needing CPR are rarely ever resuscitated. Some CPR issues are discussed such as when to give prolonged CPR, when not to start CPR, and when to stop CPR.
We HIGHLY encourage taking the full 16 hrs if your schedule permits.

The combination of classroom and hands-on experience will prepare you for basic trail tread construction, trail drainage, and trail maintenance.
Additional Training: On Sunday Aug. 10, WRV will be holding an advanced trail skills training at Brainard Lake Recreation Area. This training will focus on some of the specialized rock work that is often needed on trail construction projects. This training is intended to compliment our basic trail skills class.
