Ute Prairie Dog Project
COMPLETED |
| ● ● Miniumum Age: 12 | ||||||||||||||||
Date(s):
This City of Boulder Open Space property functions as a habitat conservation area for prairie dogs and other important local species. The prairie dogs have been crossing the property line and negatively impacting adjacent private property. This is a common issue throughout Boulder County and elsewhere along the Front Range as urbanization eliminates Prairie Dog habitat and concentrates the remaining Prairie Dogs on smaller and smaller tracts of land. The Prairie Dogs are routinely chewing through the existing artificial barrier. Research has shown that living visual barriers can be more effective than artificial barriers. On this project, we will plant a 1000 foot long living hedge which will function as a visual barrier to discourage Prairie Dogs from crossing the fence line. We will plant 700 native shrubs (wild rose, sumac, wild plum and choke cherry), protect them with wire cages and install a temporary drip irrigation system to water the shrubs. Lunch will be provided. |

Date(s):
This beautiful lake is located just outside of the Indian Peaks Wilderness Boundary, a steep one mile hike in from the trailhead. Numerous social trails and illegal lakeside campsites have left a large scar at this heavily visited location. Volunteers will: close social trails; close and revegetate numerous illegal lakeside campsites with locally collected transplant plugs; install signs showing location of official campsites and trails; re-route badly eroded portion of trail heading down to lake; close and rehab portion of old mine road. Meals will be provided and volunteers will have the opportunity to camp for two nights at this beautiful mountain location. |

Date(s):
We will address impacts to the fragile sub-alpine environment near gorgeous Mitchell Lake. This project is part of our on-going "Adopt Mitchell Lake" program, now in its third year of activity. We will re-route and revegetate a steep wide eroded 200 yard section of trail above the lake and extend an existing plank boardwalk through a nearby wetland area. We will also close social trails near the lake. Meals will be provided and volunteers will have the opportunity to spend the night at the historic CMC Brainard Cabin. |

| ● ● Miniumum Age: 18 | ||||||||||||||||
Date(s):
The new 14,000 acre James Peak Wilderness will soon be established right in our backyard. This gorgeous area, roughly west of Rollinsville, has been used heavily for decades. Many trails, roadways and camping areas have been severely impacted and need help. The Forest Service is busy this summer trying to improve conditions and restore impacted areas in anticipation of the upcoming wilderness designation. Please join us in that important and exciting process! This year, WRV is beginning a multi-year effort to help restore the area. Our activities will include: rerouting 1400 feet of trail away from a sensitive wetland, restoration of the wetland, and collection of native seed for future restoration projects. Volunteers will have the opportunity to camp near a beautiful meadow and creek that is about a mile from the trailhead. We'll hike in Friday evening to set up camp and begin work on Saturday morning. Meals will be provided. |
