Would you enjoy working with a great team of fellow volunteers to take the helm of a WRV restoration project and lead it to success? If leadership, teamwork, project planning and getting "behind the scenes" with restoration sound like they're up your alley, you’re a great candidate to become a Project Leader! Consider taking our training to become a Project Leader or Assistant Project Leader for the 2009 season. WHAT IS PROJECT LEADERSHIP? The Project Leader works with the project leadership team, land managers, and WRV staff, and is the single person with the comprehensive "big picture" view of a project. WRV depends upon many dedicated volunteers to complete thirty stewardship projects on public lands each year. Most WRV projects are managed by a leadership team that includes a project leader, technical advisor, cook team, tool manager and sometimes others. The Project Leader coordinates the team and ensures that all aspects of a project are taken care of prior to the project event. Most new Project Leaders start off as an Assistant Project Leader, working with an experienced Project Leader to learn the ropes of project management. Restoration projects can be complex. Project management is a systematic approach that helps leaders bring in projects on time and on budget while remaining reasonably sane. This training session outlines the basics of project management that can be applied to restoration, or other workplace settings. Safety always comes first on A WRV project! WRV encourages volunteers, especially leaders, to take this valuable training. And, as we all know, first aid skills are valuable for life in general. Would you know what to do if someone needed your help in the back country? What if that someone was you or your friend? This course is designed for those of you who want to know what to do in a back country emergency. In this course you will receive hands on practice time. You will participate in first aid scenarios that will sharpen your first aid skills and give you a chance to practice in "real life". This training will be instructed by Mark Rosoff with the Front Range Institute of Safety (www.frisfirstaid.com/). This Wilderness First Aid course will provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to care for those who are injured or suddenly ill in remote locations. The Wilderness Medical Society defines wilderness as a remote geographical location more than one hour from definitive medical care. Also covered is an overview of wilderness medicine issues such as wilderness emergencies and extended care situations. The text for this course is "Wilderness First Aid: Emergency Care for Remote Locations" tells how to identify and treat illness and injury encountered specifically in remote locations. The text is included in the course fee. Certificates Issued: Standard Wilderness First Aid. This is Part ONE of a two part training. Part 1: Tues/Thurs evening course (8 hours): This eight hour course consists of classroom instruction, demonstration, practical skills practice, the use of audio/visual materials, and student participation. This course does not cover the entire book in detail. Instead the instructor provides an overview of the material and presents the highlights on the various topics. The students are expected to read the book after the course is completed in order to reinforce what was discussed and learn in more detail what is in the book. We HIGHLY encourage you to sign up for both Parts 1 & 2, for the full 16 hours of training. However, it is possible to only take Part ONE. NOTE: CPR instruction is not part of the Wilderness First Aid course. Individuals in remote locations needing CPR are rarely resuscitated. Next they participate in scenarios in order to teach them how to evaluate the medical emergency, treat the patient, and develop an evacuation plan. Finally, the group acts together as a team involving a scenario with multiple victims. All scenarios are debriefed by the students. Discussion and evaluation is encouraged. Crew leadership is a great way to enhance your stewardship of public lands and build your professional leadership skills while helping other volunteers get the most out of a project! This training will help you develop team building skills, situational leadership skills, proper tool usage techniques, and volunteer care and safety protocols. You will also be introduced to the field of ecological restoration and get hands-on practice as a restoration crew leader at Sawhill Ponds and Bald Mountain in Boulder. WRV is pleased to be co-hosting this training with the Outdoor Stewardship Institute (formerly known as the Colorado Outdoor Training Initiative) and the City of Boulder, Open Space and Mountain Parks. This training is designed to provide you with an overview of willow biology and restoration basics (i.e., harvesting guidelines, selecting the best willows for restoration, cutting and storage methods, and basic installation guidelines). A solid grasp of these fundamentals is important for the successful implementation of nearly all willow restoration projects. Participants will receive a willow cutting and harvesting technical guide, 4 hours of hands-on instruction, and a chance to practice their new skills while harvesting willow cuttings at St. Vrain State Park, 15 minutes east of Longmont near I-25. Every WRV project requires tools. No Tools, No Project! Tool managers are the beloved volunteers who put so much care into organizing the tools and gear for a project, and transporting them to and from the worksite. Tool management is a great way to get more involved with a project without a lot of training or experience. And, you can usually take off during the middle of a project to relax or recreate if you like. On this Wednesday evening, from 5:00 to 7:30pm, we'll gather at our tool shed in Gunbarrel to talk about how tool managers work with the rest of project planning team, assemble a tool list, transport tools to and from the site, stage tools for crews, help with camp set-up, and more. You'll have a chance to see our spectacular collection of tools and ask questions. Once trained you can mentor with an experienced tool manager to learn on a real project! |

We’ll discuss the roles and responsibilities of a WRV Technical Advisor (TA), and how the TA works within a WRV Project Team. We’ll discuss how to plan a project that accomplishes the desired technical goals, but also works well for crew leaders and volunteers. The training runs from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Arrive at 5:30pm to for food! This is NOT a training session on the technical design aspects of projects. Since projects vary so much, and employ so many different restoration techniques, the best way to learn design is "on the job" as an assistant technical advisor. We’ll have some time during the session for returning TAs to describe the highlights of what they have learned being a TA. WRV has a relatively small TA community, so we also want this meeting to be a venue to meet each other, share ideas, and ask questions of your peers. |

Learn new Trail Skills in a popular hiking area west of boulder! WRV maintains, closes or reroutes trails several times a year to protect sensitive habitat while enhancing recreational access. Oftentimes, these projects are in spectacular mountain settings. In this Friday all day training, we'll gather in the setting of the popular Brainard Lake Recreation Area, west of Boulder along the Peak-to-Peak Hwy. WRV is collaborating with the Outdoor Stewardship Initiative to bring you the best possible training in the basics of trail construction and maintenance. We'll cover basic trail construction, drainage structures, rock steps, rock walls, and more. This training offers a nice complement to the restoration and leadership skills emphasized at other WRV trainings and projects. This training will be immediately followed by our St. Vrain Trail Restoration project on July 11-12 where you can put your new skills to work in a supportive hands-on environment and continue to refine your trail expertise. Please join us for this 3 1/2 day carpentry skills intensive, a fantastic opportunity to learn and practice carpentry skills under the guidance of expert professional carpenter and builder, Phil Dougan. This opportunity is only open to a small group, which means an excellent student/teacher ratio. This training will be held at the Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge, near Walden Colorado. The refuge protects critical wildlife habitat along 27.4 miles of the Illinois River. This place is gorgeous, with abundant elk, moose, birds, and a spectacular panorama of surrounding mountains. The training will involve extensive one-on-one instruction on basic carpentry techniques, hand and power tool use, project layout. We will be building/repairing about 50 feet of boardwalk and laying out the path of 300 feet of additional boardwalk using transits, in preparation for WRV’s grand finale boardwalk project on Aug 5-9. . There should be plenty of time to address the interests of the participants and to explain the broader applications of the skills and techniques that we will be using to construct the boardwalk. Since space is very limited for this training, first priority will go to persons attending the Boardwalk project on Aug 5-9 and/or WRV leaders. This training will run Thursday through Sunday, ending by noon on Sunday. Please plan to arrive on Wednesday afternoon or evening. We'll be camping near a house, and will have access to a kitchen, bathroom, hot showers, etc. All meals provided. |
